Both float assemblies have to give good readings to the computer for this to be a successful repair. This job got easier the second and third time we did it. The first pump assembly worked great but the float assembly gave unusable info to the control system when the amount of fuel was more than about 3/8 of a tank which set a code. Another thing that anyone tackling this pump system replacement is to ohm out the float assemblies before you reinstall them in the saddle tanks. I ordered a pump for the left side or “driver’s side” from a parts house and they delivered a cylindrical pump only which I am going to keep as a spare for the right side. SO, I think that the early cars were piped and pump with only one active pump. Any excess goes in the driver’s side saddle bag to be sent back through some real magic. The fuel to the engine is fed from the “traffic cop” on the driver’s side. The passenger side (real pump) is the driver of it all and sends a powerful stream through the smallest hose with a white connector to feed the passenger (no pump) side. The driver’s side system has only 2 wire connector which is for getting the output from the level indicator only. The fuel to the engine is fed from the driver’s side. The fuel system in my vehicle has a “pump” on the passenger side saddle bag and a complicated system of hoses, a check valve and a metal canister on the driver’s side. I am pretty sure there is a difference between Tbirds mfg between start of mfg date in 2001 and November 2002.
